Mathematical Chance to Avoid a Breakdown in Our Climate
Using a football analogy...we need to be perfect AND we need a whole lot of luck!
Hi Everyone,
In a recent exchange on LinkedIn, I offered this football analogy (NFL for those from outside North America) and I thought I’d share it with you.
Many good people are still hopeful that we can keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. Hope is a good thing and I too am hopeful of better days ahead. But we can’t get lost in hopeful optimism and lose sight of just how poorly we’re doing in our efforts to protect our climate. At this point, despite what the media is telling us, incremental gains are not enough to prevent a devastating tipping point where we rapidly approach Hothouse Earth.
If we were a football team, we would still have a mathematical chance to make the playoffs BUT we would have to win the last 6 games of the season and all of our competitors would need to lose their remaining games. It’s possible BUT not likely.
Don’t be fooled by the mainstream narrative which tells us to buy electric cars and reduce our meat consumption. These are positive choices but this is a dangerous message as it diverts our attention away from where we should be focusing…prevention at all costs, and unfortunately preparation of what’s to come. This will be the focus of my next article.
If you appreciate my my writing and activism efforts, you can now buy me a coffee. Every little bit is greatly appreciated!
Warm Regards
Brad
Hi Brad! I love this! I'm also using football analogies to help break down the challenge of decarbonizing. In particular, the "First Gigawatt Down" metric to help people see how far they have to go on the supply side in their own state to get to zero carbon. Here's a video to explain the concept. https://youtu.be/8--VSh0JUT0
I've tried to use the 2 minute drill football analogy and hail Mary's too, whatever we can to get the masses to try and conceptualize to help shift momentum
